Suspected Ankle Injury?

If you just sustained an injury to your ankle, take these immediate R.I.C.E. steps:

  • Rest the ankle and refrain from excessive movement
  • Ice the affected area to reduce pain and inflammation
  • Compress the ankle with an elastic bandage to reduce swelling and provide stability
  • Elevate your ankle above the level of your heart to reduce fluid accumulation and swelling
After R.I.C.E. has been done, seek medical attention to
ensure that there is no underlying issue and that
appropriate treatment can be given.

Treatments Available

Depending on the type and severity of the injury, treatment may include a combination of:

  • Physiotherapy | Appropriate exercises to improve flexibility, balance and strength of the ankle.
  • Medications | NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) to reduce pain and inflammation.
  • Casting | Use of a brace or cast to protect and provide extra support to the ankle.
  • Ankle Surgery | In severe cases, surgery may be required in order to repair damaged soft tissues (e.g., ligaments, muscles and tendons) or reposition broken bone.
Dr Sean Ng is fellowship-trained in Switzerland and has
